Why Katahdins?

NO SHEARING - The hair coat requires no shearing and "tags" don't stick to their coat so tail docking and crutching are not  necessary.  The hair coat provides exceptional protection in cold weather but sheds in early spring so they continue to eat and grow well in summers heat.

Excellent mothering ability - Katahdins usually have twins with plenty of milk and the instinct to raise them to weaning.

Parasite resistant - Research is proving that many Katahdins have a genetic trait that helps them resist the barbor pole worm therefore reducing or eliminating the need for de-worming.  We are starting to do testing to identify sheep in our flock that have a resistance to worm load.  We have been using the Famacha program for two years now to check for anemia.  Our purchase of Ivomec and Valbazen has been reduced by at least 80%. This is extremely important as there are no new de-wormers being created by the pharmaceutical companies and we have so far been able to avoid using Cydectin.

Adaptability - From the the harsh winters in Canada to the heat of Mexico, a look at the membership list will show that Katahdins thrive in many different climates.

Strong flocking instinct - when they feel threatened they will band together in a tight group.  Many sheep dog trainers have capitalized on this to help train their young dogs.  In addition to the flocking instinct, Katahdins with their hair coats don't get overheated as quickly as wool breeds.
